Welcome to Grade 6!

6th grade is an exciting year for Eli Whitney students!  We participate in many activities and our curriculum is packed with hands- on learning that will allow students to grow and mature as they prepare for their future.

Some of our more notable events include the following fundraising activities and school trips:

·         Yankee Candle fundraiser

·         ice cream social

·         silent auction

·         assisting the Student Council with the organization of school donations for the Enfield Food Shelf

·         yearbook preparation

·         JFK visit to allow students to spend time at their future school

·         Boston Museum of Science and the Duck Tour field trip

As a sixth grade, our academic year is very important. We are preparing for the Connecticut Mastery test in Language Arts by concentrating on making reader text connections, developing an interpretation and forming a general understanding.  Our Language Arts program includes a mixture of guided reading, shared reading, and independent reading and reflection.  Some of our themes include personal best, in which we spend time helping the students set goals and take steps to help them accomplish them.

In Math, we are concentrating on fractions, decimals and percents, computation with whole numbers and decimals, estimation, math applications as well as measurement.

In 6th grade, we explore many topics in Social Studies and Science. In Social Studies, we examine ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, China, Egypt, Greece, and Rome in Social Studies. We focus on the 5 themes of geography (location, place, environmental interactions, movement, and region) and how they organize themselves politically, economically, socially, and religiously. We also discuss how ancient civilizations contribute to our world today. In science, we focus on cells, light, and various other topics.

We look forward to working with you and your 6th grader this year.
