First grade is an exciting year for the children and their families. The students move from learning letters and sounds to becoming independent readers!
Students’ reading ability grows through the use of a variety of approaches. Children read in small groups at their own level. Students learn how to manipulate the sounds of words through Lively Letters and various phonics activities. We also use an anthology of stories to help build vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Through poetry, songs, and big books students learn patterns in language. Students are eager to share what they’ve learned in reading through written responses.
First graders learn the components of writing a narrative story (character, setting, problem, solution). They also learn how to write to a prompt, as well as free write their own stories. Students move from inventive to conventional spelling of words. Weekly spelling tests begin in January.
In Math, students go beyond their basic counting skills and engage in strategic math activities and problem solving. Students learn to count and use numbers from 1 to 100, explore time and money, and measure. Students develop a beginning understanding of fractions, geometry and probability. It is important for first graders to become fluent in addition and subtraction facts to 12 by the end of the school year. In order to reach that goal, they will receive weekly math facts to practice and master beginning in January.
Science and Social Studies are a great way for literacy to be integrated in a meaningful way. Plants, weather and magnets are our core science topics. First graders also learn about holidays, citizenship, occupations, and basic map skills. Health topics covered include tobacco, drugs and alcohol awareness.
We know that first grade is a special time for your child to grow as a learner. Home and school working together creates a successful partnership!
